Chords of Orion: Frippertronics with tape delay plugins.

I’ve long enjoyed the Chords of Orion channel, even if I don’t write about it all that much. Bill Vencil is an unabashed fan of the concept of Frippertronics, and when I saw this clip about his setting up DAW plugins to mimic the behavior of actual tape decks, I had to take a peek–because he would take such a statement seriously.

Yeah, that certainly sounds pretty authentic to me. (For those who don’t know the output of the “small, intelligent mobile unit” period of 1979-1981, let’s just say: there’s a unique vibe to the sound that even Fripp’s own later Soundscapes, wonders that they are, don’t have. Bill’s captured it here–not necessarily reproduced an existing sound verbatim, but actually captured the essential vibe itself.

It needs a bookmark. I’ll want to unpack the details later, and then (since I’m not invested in Strymon) see what I can do with the plugins I have. I’m hopeful that I might be able to use the free ++delay plugin (which is capable of delay times of up to 10 seconds), with or without other delays from the IK Multimedia landscape that I’ve invested in myself.
